As a way to build bridges between those making food with those who shop for it, Ontario cattle farmer Christine McNaughton @chancesmommy takes to Twitter, blogging and other social tools to talk about beef and the way life is from her side of the fence. Canada Beef spoke with Christine about why farmers should be flexing their Social muscle!

CB: Tell us a bit about your involvement in beef farming.

CM: My husband, @CanManFarm and I are Beef farmers (cow/calf farm with selling frozen beef to the public). Though John does most of the farming, Little One and I help on the farm as well.  We help with everything from feeding, planting, etc.  John is also Chair of the Manitoulin Cattlemen’s Association. I do a lot of work in promoting and supporting agriculture and the Canadian beef farming on social media.

CB: What’s the draw of social media for you as someone raising cattle?

CM: Social Media to us is primarily providing the public with information. We’re an unfiltered source for information – coming from ground up. It’s also a great way to connect and share info with other farmers and folks working at all levels to get beef to market.
CB: What’s your favourite topic to tweet about?

CM: Life on the farm is our favourite topic to tweet about. My husband, John (@CanManFarm) enjoys tweeting about public perceptions and misconceptions (because it’s valid for both ways). And truth be told, my favourite topic to tweet about is food and recipes! It’s quite fitting as we live on beef farm!

CB: Why should other farmers or ranchers consider telling their story through social media?

CM: Social Media gets the story out from the our point of view without any spin, or perceived spin.  It’s a way to tell our story that is authentic and personal.
